NOTE: This is NOT the version with the hidden UV (i.e. invisible) pen and light.. You will need this one to get those features: My 13-year-old ordered this with an Amazon gift card she received for Xmas. I will give you that it's cute and she's had a ball "sonic-ing" things all over the place, but $23 for this bit of plastic is ridiculous. (You are, of course, paying for the name, not just the product.) The plastic is of the brittle, easily chipped variety. If she drops it on the floor, something will DEFINITELY pop off! I am certain there are less expensive versions out there that still carry the coveted Dr Who brand. (Okay, I just did a Google Shopping search and they seem to range from $11 - $28, not including shipping. I'm a Prime member, so shipping was free with this $23 marvel. LOL)They also come in different versions... e.g. the 10th doctor's sonic screwdriver, the 4th doctor's, the 11th doctor's, etc. This particular one has a photo of River Song on the box (which I think they sneakily don't show you on the description page for this item) so this is River Song's screwdriver. HOWEVER, as I told my daughter, in one episode River whips out "her own" sonic screwdriver... when the Doctor looks at her curiously, she tells him that it was one he loans her (in his future) and she wasn't able to give back (or something to that effect). So it's still technically THE DOCTOR'S screwdriver. (So, for those of you who argue -- or whose teenage friends argue! -- that THEIR sonic screwdriver is more "authentic" because it belonged to the 10th Doctor, or whoever, and that YOUR version is River's, not HIS, it is. LOL Yes, my daughter's friend had this discussion with her, and I had to settle it by summarizing the episode I just mentioned. lmao)Anyway, shop and compare. You might decide to go ahead and get this one, or you might find another one that's more to your liking, both price-wise and feature-wise. For my daughter, this was $23 well spent. Go figure. LOL My daughter's friend's screwdriver telescopes out at the end, while this one doesn't. This item DOES come with the 3 required button cell batteries to get your started.Happy sonic-ing!River's screwdriver arrived today... I had been thinking about getting this for months but finally jumped on it after the Doctor Who Facebook page shared the link for the end of the second library episode the other day: http://youtu.be/O7mv8FSJDnQ "I'm VERY good!"It's pretty cool. I was almost afraid to touch it because of all of the reviews saying it breaks easily and I can definitely see how it's delicate but I don't expect it to break for me. (Knock on wood.)I like that you can change the head's light color from blue to red by pressing the hidden button. And if you hold that button down for a couple of seconds, you'll see where River is saved.I also bought this because I'm banking on the fact that it'll be a future Doctor's screwdriver (Capaldi's?). I know it River said goodbye but that was the "saved" version of River. We have yet to see River first meet The Doctor and we haven't seen The Doctor give her his screwdriver. So she's got to be in at least one more episode, right? And whether this screwdriver is used in just one future episode or serves a more long-term purpose, it HAS to turn up again. And when that happens, I expect the price to jump. (It was $22 when I bought it this week... it says it's supposed to be $35.)That means buying this is a wise investment decision any financial adviser would recommend. :-)The Underground Toys Doctor Who River Song Future Screw Driver measures 7" in length and closely resembles the 10th Doctor's screwdriver. The River Song version varies in a few different ways, all of which are evident in this toy version. Unlike the Doctor's counterpart, this version does not extend. They've added a few different design elements, such as a plate that covers the neural relay, depicted by a series of LEDs which light up with a long press of the settings button, displaying Rivers saved life force. The settings button also changes the normally blue screwdriver LED into the life saving red setting. We have quite the geeky home office and I bought this more as a piece for her to display, and it is her first screwdriver in our now combined collection. It comes with batteries installed, and uses 3 LR44 batteries when its time to replace them. I think she was excited by the gift, so far the installed batteries have held up to her hours of making things around the house "more sonic" It should easily hold up to normal wear and tear, but it is a toy after all and should be treated properly if you want it to last a time lords life time. The version of this which I bought is of very high quality which changing emitter colour (blue and red) with green neural relay.Only slight issues:-some tiny issues with paint work i.e some gold spots on grey handle and a tiny spill of gold on the black end piece-the emitter lens has a tiny pressure crack but again is only truly noticeable when examining the emitter-the seam where the two parts of the main body meet as a gap a bit larger than others I've seen previously, but again nothing super major.Overall: Amazing, Detail is great with no legal guff on the body of the Sonic. Exactly as advertised. The small issues with my one do not bother me as they they are only noticeable on close inspection. This Sonic Screwdrives is a really nice representation of the one from almost 10 years ago, from both River Song's debut appearance in "Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead" and then a little cameo in "The Husbands of River Song". It glows blue and red, and has a removable panel, showing the neural relay device that was the final storage of River Song's soul, before Steven Moffat overplayed that plot twist to hell and back.So so hapoy with this and a proud addition to my collection. The build is amazing, the sound is awesome and such a rare find so very happy with it.This was bought for my 11 year old grandson who absolutely loves Dr Who. He love the Screwdriver but the disappointment is the red light is often not working so I'm assuming there is a loose connection and so am having to return. Otherwise it met his expectations. For the price I wanted something a bit more solid. It feels cheaply made. Although time will tell.
